In one of our previous articles, we have made a short roundup of the best tonneau covers for Nissan Titan. Then we mentioned just how impressive of a vehicle the said model is. Well, if you are a fan of big Japanese trucks, you are in for a treat.
This time we are going to take a brief look at the equipment for Titan’s younger and more powerful brother Nissan Frontier. Aside from improving upon virtually every single of the Titan specs, Frontier features one more important characteristic – the truck is far larger than Titan both in terms of interior and exterior size.
However, the bed size of these two vehicles is pretty similar. So, let us once more go through some of the covers we have reviewed in our previous article and a couple of new entries and try to find the best tonneau cover for Nissan Frontier.
Sometimes, even the smallest changes can make all the difference in the world.
The 5 Tonneau Covers for Nissan Frontier in 2020 – Reviews
1. Tyger Auto T1 Soft Roll Up Truck Bed Tonneau Cover (2005-2020 Nissan Frontier)
We are always glad when we get an opportunity to review some of Tyger Auto’s products. The reason behind this affection is pretty simple – there are very few instances when this famous company disappointed us with their products. And after weeks of extensive testing, we can say this is probably the best Nissan Frontier bed cover in this price range.
We put this small asterisk because this product is considered to be entry-level and belongs to the lower price segments. Judging by the performance you will get out of it, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference from some far more expensive products.
Seriously, what’s not to like here? The dual-coated 24-ounce marine-grade vinyl feels premium and, as far as we were able to notice, is able to sustain a great deal of damage and pressure without tearing apart, letting the water in.
This excellent waterproof performance is only underlined by the excellent Velcro that keeps the cover spread across the bed and tightly connected sidebars. Although this type of sealing is not perfect, we have noticed only the minor leakages in the corners of the bed.
Throw into equation durable aluminum side rails that are as easy to mount as it gets (you use clamps so no need for drilling), and you might wonder, is there anything wrong with this product?
Well, there are a couple of things. First, vinyl tends to roll up in the corners after some time, so the protection is not as tight as we would like. Also, upon the second inspection, we have noticed that the whole setup is somewhat squeaky.
This product may have a couple of small flaws (e.g., the cover rolls up after extended use), but its price and overall quality more than compensate for these drawbacks. Excellent purchase if you are operating on a tight budget.
2. MaxMate Soft Roll Up Truck Bed- Tonneau Cover (2005-2019 Nissan Frontier)
If you would try to quickly compare this product with the Nissan Frontier tonneau cover we have just reviewed, you would be hard-pressed to find any discernible difference. As a matter of fact, if you don’t take into account branding (fortunately absent from this product), the two units are almost a spitting image of each other.
However, after a couple of weeks of use, you will notice that some differences do exist – just as we did after exhausting and thorough testing.
So if you take into account that both units are made from quality vinyl (24-ounce marine-grade) and feature quality clamp-mounted aluminum rails, what made us give this product slightly higher grades?
We’ll tell you – it’s all about Velcro and the tension system. The previous bed cover for Nissan Frontier had trouble keeping the corners of the sheet in place after the extended use. That’s natural because vinyl has a tendency to roll up after some time, especially at high temperatures.
This time though, everything feels spot on, and we felt the side rails haven’t had a problem keeping the vinyl spread out and wrinkle-free no matter how long we used it. Just like we tested the cover on Nissan Titan, we gave our truck a couple of automatic car wash treatments.
And the result was just the same – the cargo was safe and dry.
Still, keep in mind that this level of performance demands dead-pan installation, so you will need to accurately mount side rails.
MaxMate Soft Roll Up Cover probably comes as close to a perfect Nissan Frontier low profile tonneau cover as vinyl sheets can go. Sure, Velcro is not the perfect sealing system, but the sheet is durable, and the cover remains well-spread no matter how long you use it.
3. Gator ETX Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover (2005 – 2020 Nissan Frontier)
And as the third entry of this short roundup of Nissan Frontier covers, we have a product we hadn’t considered when we compiled our list of covers for Titan. So, what does this new challenger bring to the table?
Actually quite a lot. You see, this is the first vinyl-based retractable bed cover for Nissan Frontier and Titan we have considered on these lists. If you are not familiar with the term, this means that the vinyl sheet is mounted on the tri-fold aluminum frame and attached to aluminum side rails.
The vinyl on display here is industrial grade-and features extreme durability. Believe us, we put it through hell and high water, and the material left reasonably undamaged. Also, the aluminum frame ensures that the material will remain well-spread and wrinkle-free.
So, the efficiency of this unit mostly boils down to how well the side rails are able to seal the space around the truck’s bed. What we observed after extended testing is that the unit, for the most part, succeeds in this task.
Let us explain ourselves – in order to avoid excessive rubbing against the back of the truck’s cabin, we had to leave some space between the cover and the cabin. That left some minor space through which the water managed to find its way into the tonneau. This was not a deal-breaker, but it is something we have to report.
As for the side-sealing, the unit performed quite nicely even when exposed to direct hits of the hosepipe.
Gator ETX Soft Tri-Fold cover is far from a perfect product, but it does offer surprisingly good performance for the money you are asked to pay. Sure, there is some space you need to leave between the cabin and the cover, but if you are not living in a humid area, that shouldn’t be that big of a problem.
4. TruXedo TruXport Soft Roll Up Truck Bed Tonneau Cover (2005 – 2020 Nissan Frontier)
And after this short venture into the world of tri-fold soft covers, we are going back to the good old roll-up units. So, we can say that TruXedo TruXport doesn’t bring that many new things on the table. Let us see if the slightly higher price is warranted in comparison with the previous two similar products.
At first glance, it looks like that might just be the case. Seriously, we can’t even start to explain how good the vinyl you can find in this package feels. What’s even better, the sheet is embossed with leather on its outer side, which allows it an additional layer of protection against any kind of damage.
At some point, we even started dropping rocks on the fabric to see if it would end up damaged, but the cover survived all the punishment we tried to inflict on it.
The other thing we were pleasantly surprised with was the quality of the Velcro. The seals feel rock-solid. Once the cover is rolled out, there is no way the water will find its way inside the truck’s bed. At least in the areas where the Velcro is tightly sealed.
That brings us to the main complaint we had with this product. The outside leather-embossing kills what little stretch-ability you can find in vinyl covers. That means that the side rails need to be exceptionally precisely mounted to keep everything together.
Now, either we were unable to do so (not likely), or the fabric we got was not properly cut, but either way, the cover left some weak sports that let the water in during testing.
There is no better way to describe this product than tough as nails. However, the low stretch-ability of the cover means that you will sometimes have a hard time sealing the Velcro straps. That may let a minimal amount of water into the bed.
5. BAK BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Truck Bed Tonneau Cover (2005 – 2020 Nissan Frontier)
Last but not least, we have a product pretending for the title of the best Nissan Frontier hard bed cover on the market. How well the people from Bak BakFlip succeeded in this challenging task? Well, after a couple of long weeks of extended use, we can say that we are more than pleased with the overall results.
Let us first point out that aluminum hard folding covers are the absolute champions in durability, and this unit is no exception. This excellent story is made even better by the fact that the matte surface we can find on the exterior of the aluminum panel provides the product with an additional layer of protection against UV rays, physical damage, and rain.
And, to be quite honest, the whole thing looks great.
As for the setup, since aluminum covers are not very flexible, so you need to be very precise when it comes to installation. But, the frame is at least very durable, and with enough patience, you will be able to set everything firmly in place.
So, we can say that after long and exhausting testing Bak BakFlip managed to score a lot of goodwill in our ranks.
As for the drawbacks? Well, there are some. For instance, the material sealing the cover on the side is not entirely waterproof. But that didn’t cause any problem unless we spayed the tonneau with direct hose streams.
This hard aluminum cover is simply excellent, and we assure you – it will be able to protect your cargo from any kind of damage and elements. The only way you will be able to get the items wet is if you put the truck through a washer or drown it in heavy rain. But there are slight chances that will happen – at least too often.
So, now that we are at the very end, it is time for you to decide what is the best tonneau cover for Nissan Frontier. Like always, we left the final decision in your hands. Sure, we have a couple of products we prefer over the others. But, on the other hand, our needs may be drastically different from yours.
In the end, the best thing you can do is to make a shortlist of requirements your ideal cover absolutely needs to address, go through all the pros and cons of the products above and find your ideal match.
